An invitation into a writer's world.
The story...
Jo and Jack grow up in different worlds. Jack knows hardship and poverty to a level that is beyond Jo's imagination. They have one thing in common: both grew up without the love of their mother. When their worlds collide the connection is immediate and electric.
Their idyllic life in her father's house is shattered when Jack is caught in an explosion in troubled Somalia and has to learn to live again.
Supporting Jo, Jack, and their sons through their traumas is the unlikely hero of the book: Danny, Jack's wayward brother with a criminal past.

A brilliant read with great insights into PTSD and the intricacies of relationships. Highly recommended. A quick read because you won’t be able to put it down.
This is a great read with characters you feel you know. S D Johnson has written an intriguing novel with a strong story line that will keep you gripped, and a cast you really care about. I enjoyed it immensely.
This is a saga of events which take place over years. It is very readable and I found it hard to put down. There were times when my heart was in my mouth for the characters. They are believable and illustrate differences in class and background. I was left thinking about the role of fate and the influence of upbringing on people's lives and their strength in overcoming circumstances.

A throttling good read
Johnson possesses a knack for creating crackling dialogue, drawing taut scenes, and sculpting real-to-life characters who get under your skin such that you want them to suffer a severe calamity.
I read this book in a weekend, a testament to its pacy plot and brisk prose. The ending threw me for an emotional loop which I liked because I didn't expect it.
Bravo! Take a bow, Johnson
